"INCIDENT_REPORT": "On August 19, 2026, at approximately 12:53 PM, Manatee County Utilities Department (MCUD) staff were notified of a sanitary sewer overflow (SSO) located near 6606 Cheswick Street in Sarasota. The SSO occurred when a split formed in a 6\" force main, allowing an estimated 35 gallons of raw wastewater to discharge onto the ground. Some of this wastewater flowed south along the roadside gutter and entered a nearby storm water drain potentially impacting a retention pond that is a surface water of the state. Manatee County Utilities Department staff were able to stop the discharge on August 19, 2026 at 2:30 PM when they turned a valve to isolate the system, turned off the upstream lift station and installed a clamp on the force main to repair it. Manatee County Utilities Department staff washed down hard surfaces with potable water and applied bleach to the roadside gutter. MCUD staff were able to recover approximately 400 gallons of spilled wastewater mixed with rinse water using a vacuum truck. Due to the potentially affected retention pond, Manatee County staff will perform an investigation and will collect fecal coliform and E.coli samples from the retention pond.",
