"incident_comment": "The contract operator for the King George County Service Authority sent a letter that serves as the required five-day written follow-up letter to the 24-h notification made on May 21, 2026 (PREP Report #323632), regarding a sewer leak that occurred near 8534 King’s Highway (Route 3) in King George County. At 12:05 AM on May 21, 2026, the contract operator staff was informed of a leak along the shoulder of Route 3. Maintenance staff responded in 15 min. and identified a sewer leak associated with recent interconnection work performed on the gravity/force main system as part of the ongoing project to interconnect the Courthouse and Hopyard sewer collection systems. Upon confirmation of the leak, maintenance staff isolated the affected section of sewer by closing a valve to minimize flow to the area. A contract crew from Patriot arrived on site at 2:30 AM and took over the pump and haul diversion for the remainder of the overnight period. Crews from WC Spratt and maintenance staff returned at 8:00 AM, following completion of emergency utility locates, and excavated the affected area. The leak was identified 5 feet below grade at a 10-inch diameter 11¼ bend installed to avoid a conflict with an existing PCCP stormwater pipe. The failure is believed to be due to advanced corrosion of the ductile iron fitting, likely associated with low flow conditions and hydrogen sulfide gas. The affected area was cleaned, residual sewage was vacuumed and removed, and lime was applied to impacted areas. Repairs were completed, and the system was returned to normal operation by 12:00 PM on May 21, 2026. An estimated volume of less than 500 gallons of sewage was discharged from the leak, and no body of water was affected. \n\nOn May 22, 2026, a 5-day letter was submitted to DEQ explaining the SSO and all actions conducted to resolve the issue and clean the area. No further action required. \n\nOn May 27, 2026: DEQ staff closed the case because no further action was necessary.",
