"incident_comment": "Location of Overflow - 105 Ashcake Road, Ashland, VA 23005\nFacility & VPDES Permit # - Ashland WWTF - VA0024899\nDate/Time DEQ Notified - The DEQ was notified by email on 5-30-2026\nEstimated Volume/Receiving Stream - Approximately 3000 gallons of untreated domestic sanitary sewage to a stormwater stream that flows to the south ultimately leading to Stony Run. It appears that the majority of the discharge was contained within the gravel parking lot, however, some volume of the discharge reached the stream.\nDate & Duration of Overflow\tThe discharge started at approximately 12:00 on 5-29-2026 and was reported to Hanover DPU at 13:00 on 5-29-2026. The Discharge was stopped at 14:30 on 5-29-2026.\nDescription - On 5-29-2026 the business located at 105 Ashcake Road began experiencing a sewer overflow within the building at approximately 12:00 on 5-29. A plumber was initially contacted, however, after an initial investigation and as the volume began increasing the customer contacted the county at approximately 13:00. DPU staff immediately headed to the site and arrived on site to confirm an overflow at approximately 13:15. Pump and haul operations were initiated with 2 trucks and after the 2nd load the discharge was stopped at 14:30. Pump and Haul operations continued until the blockage in the sewer main was able to be cleared. The sewer had become clogged after filling with mud and gravel caused by damage sustained during conduit installation via Horizontal Directional Drill. The county mobilized crews to the site to excavate the sewer line and completed the necessary repairs in the early morning hours of 5-30. DPU has been checking the sewer daily to verify that no further backup issues have occurred. DPU has inspected the overflow area and has applied lime. \nCause - 10” gravity sewer struck by a Horizontal Directional Drill during conduit installation along Ashcake Road filling the sewer line with mud and gravel.\nAction Taken - DPU received the initial call at 13:00 on 5-29 regarding a sewer discharge that began at 12:00. DPU staff were immediately dispatched to the site to confirm the overflow at 13:15. Pump and haul operations were initiated and the discharge was stopped after the 2nd load was pumped at 14:30. Additionally, DPU mobilized a bypass pump to the site as a backup plan to ensure that the discharge was able to be stopped. DPU then began the effort to excavate the site and make the necessary repairs which involved sleeving a new portion of 10” PVC pipe to replace the portion damaged by the contractor. The site has been cleaned and lime has been applied to the area. DPU has been working with the contractor to ensure that the building is being cleaned and repaired.",
