What this page covers

Post-discharge periods and their sources

No period: a water is red only while the discharge is reported ongoing. Pennsylvania sets no public notice period: operators report to DEP within 4 hours and in writing within 5 days (25 Pa. Code § 92a.41(b)) and notify known downstream users "if reasonably possible" (§ 91.33); CSO public notification is a permit control with no deadline; Erie alone falls under the federal Great Lakes rule (40 CFR 122.38: public notice within 4 hours)

Source: 25 Pa. Code §§ 91.33, 92a.41, 92a.47; 40 CFR 122.38. DirtyWaterWatch applies the period described here.

How these charts are counted

We count each discharge once. Where a source publishes notices and confirmed reports, we use confirmed reports for an operator's month when available; otherwise we use notices. We combine revisions and exclude duplicate state reports copied by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Monthly and yearly totals appear separately. Status hours follow this site's rules. Shaded gaps mean missing coverage, not zero discharges.
