What this page covers
Post-discharge periods and their sources
No period: a water is red only while the discharge is reported ongoing. New Jersey sets no public notice period: CSO permits (Part IV.F.8) require outfall signs reading "Warning, possible sewage overflows during and following wet weather. Contact with water may also cause illness.", leaflets, a yearly mailing and a notification website; sanitary overflows and bypasses are reported to the DEP Hotline only (N.J.A.C. 7:14A-6.10)
Source: N.J.A.C. 7:14A-6.10 and 7:14A-11.12; NJPDES CSO permit NJ0108812 (Camden City, 2024). DirtyWaterWatch applies the period described here.

Reported discharges in New Jersey over time
Outfall: a pipe or outlet where wastewater enters a water body.
Reported monthly totals: nj-echo-monthly
Sum of 20 reporting sewer operators. Source: nj-echo-monthly. Records cover January 1, 2024 to September 30, 2026.
How these charts are counted
We count each discharge once. Where a source publishes notices and confirmed reports, we use confirmed reports for an operator's month when available; otherwise we use notices. We combine revisions and exclude duplicate state reports copied by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Monthly and yearly totals appear separately. Status hours follow this site's rules. Shaded gaps mean missing coverage, not zero discharges.
Discharge records dated within the last 30 days
No discharge records dated within the last 30 days appear in the sources we track for New Jersey.
