Reported sewage discharges in Michigan

Updated . We track 480 waters in Michigan: 5 with a sewage discharge status, 28 with caution after a discharge, and 2 with no confirmed discharge end. 445 have no current status on their water outline. 60 discharge records dated within the last 30 days.

The law and practice: Michigan law sets no period after a sewage discharge during which the water is to be avoided: whoever is responsible for a sewer system that discharges untreated or partially treated sewage must notify the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), the local health departments and a daily newspaper immediately and within 24 hours of the discharge's start, report its volume, receiving waters and times when it ends, and test the affected waters for E. coli (MCL 324.3112a). The rule this site applies, with its source

Data and its limits

Dated reports Michigan publishes dated overflow reports; the newest is from Nov 3, 2026.

What the law requires. Under MCL 324.3112a, whoever is responsible for a sewer system that discharges untreated or partially treated sewage must notify the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), the local health departments and a daily newspaper immediately, and within 24 hours of its start, report its volume, cause, waters and times when it ends, and test the affected waters for E. coli. EGLE must promptly post each notification online. Each year operators must also ask the municipalities downstream whether they wish to be notified of discharges; those that do are notified the same way (MCL 324.3112a(4)). Combined sewer operators, all in the Great Lakes basin, must also post signs at their outfalls in public areas, notify the public and the local health departments within four hours of learning of a discharge, update the notice within seven days after it ends, and publish a yearly notice of the year's discharges (40 CFR 122.38). No period after a discharge is set during which the water should be avoided.

What is published. EGLE's MiEnviro list carries every report back to 2001, and this site shows its sewage reports from 2001 on: combined sewer overflows (sewage and rainwater from a shared pipe), sanitary (sewage-only) overflows, retention treatment basin discharges (combined sewage settled and disinfected before it overflows) and others, with the operator, permit, start and end to the minute and, once completed, the volume and receiving water. Reports appear a median of about 15 hours after a discharge began; more than a third take over 24 hours.

What is not published. A map point: reports are placed by permit and outfall number, or by the water named. A report in process often names no water (144 of the 332 in process on November 4, 2026) and no volume. The newspaper notices, health department notices and E. coli results.

Known problems in the data. A report in process repeats its start as its end, and some completed reports keep it: the same minute for the start and end of a discharge of millions of gallons. Some reports stay in process for years, and permit numbers are typed in many forms.

What this site does about it. A report in process is shown as ongoing for seven days, then hatched "End not confirmed" until 30 days after it began. A completed report whose end repeats its start is read as end not confirmed: caution for 14 days, then hatched to day 30. Other completed reports get this site's caution after their end (72 hours; 96 on lakes, ponds and reservoirs), since the law sets none. Retention basin discharges are shown as combined sewer overflows of partially treated sewage. On the Great Lakes and Lake St. Clair a discharge colours a modeled stretch of shore water at the outfall, never the whole lake. Narratives, which can name residents, are not reproduced.

As of November 4, 2026, of the 1,019 registered treatment-plant and sewer outfalls in Michigan (closed outfalls aside), 914 (90 percent) are tied to a water record on this site and 105 (10 percent) are not yet; an overflow at one of those appears on the map at its point with no water coloured.

Of this state's reports on this site, 100 percent are dated to the day or better; the newest dated report is from Nov 3, 2026. Coverage: Dated reports.

What stands in the way

The law's public channel is a printed newspaper notice. Michigan's BeachGuard map shows a colour per beach, but the advisories behind it need an account, and a colour without dates or a reason cannot be cited, so this site does not read it. The state's algal bloom map is not read either: no data service behind it that can be cited has been identified.

100 percent of the sewer operators here have each overflow posted on the web, by the operator or the state (565 of 565).

Notice channels that do not reach the public on the web, by reason (a sewer operator can have several):

  • No web page1,131
  • Print only565
  • Not verified60
  • Blocks automated reading3
  • Login required1

The operators or agencies behind these counts are not listed yet.

Where operators and agencies in this state tell the public about sewage discharges: pages, lists and feeds required by law or by a permit, and those kept voluntarily. We read the ones we can and say what we find; a channel we do not read says why.

Post-discharge periods and their sources

No period: a water is red only while the discharge is reported ongoing. EGLE must promptly post each notification on its website, its MiEnviro list of sewage discharges, and combined sewer operators in the Great Lakes basin must give the public notice within 4 hours (40 CFR 122.38). Local health departments decide on beach advisories and closures from their own sampling. This site marks a reported discharge while it runs and applies its own caution after it ends

How these charts are counted

We count each discharge once. Where a source publishes notices and confirmed reports, we use confirmed reports for an operator's month when available; otherwise we use notices. We combine revisions and exclude duplicate state reports copied by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Monthly and yearly totals appear separately. Status hours follow this site's rules. Shaded gaps mean missing coverage, not zero discharges.
